Abstract
Syrian President Bashar Assad seemed to have done a power vacuum around him: USA, European Union, Turkey and most Arab states have called him to quit. Russia, which sells arms and has a naval base in Syria, said it backs a transition of power but that Assad’s departure should not be a precondition for any talks. Rebels control much of the north and east of the country. Crisis in Syria cracked equilibrium and could infect regional stability: as consequence, prosecutions and destiny of the struggle is an exam ofthe Turkish power and stability. Moreover Arab revolts oblige to take stock ofEuropean politics in Mediterranean space. The paper will analyze in the first part the nowadays situation in Syria, after the ongoing civil war, with a theoretical focus on democracy and authoritarian resilience. Secondly, negotiations for Syrian peace from international countries and EU will be analyzed in order to understand the possibility of a resolution of the crisis, which threats to be widespread to the rest of region. Thirdly, EU foreign policy in Mediterranean space will be studied with a particular focus on Syrian case.
